Bill Belichick reveals the best QB he’s ever faced
The defensive mastermind has seen his fair share of quarterbacks over the years, but he holds one in the highest esteem, above all else. Spoiler: It’s not Tom Brady.
After 46 years in the league and six Super Bowl wins as a head coach, there are none better qualified than Bill Belichick to talk about quarterback play.
The defensive mastermind has seen his fair share of quarterbacks over the years, but he holds one in the highest esteem, above all else. Spoiler: It’s not Tom Brady.
Belichick has never faced Brady, so on a technicality, he’s disqualified from this conversation. Though it would be incredible viewing if he was asked this same question after TB12 and the Bucs visit Foxboro on October 3.
Anyway, back to Belichick. Here he is discussing the greatest signal-caller he’s ever faced and there’s no surprise he hails from football’s finest family. Despite his record against New England, it isn’t Eli, rather his brother and soon-to-be Hall of Famer, Peyton.
“He is definitely the best quarterback I’ve coached against,” Belichick told Ben Volin of The Boston Globe.
“There have been quarterbacks who called their own plays, but it was nowhere near the same as what he did. He basically called every play by adjusting and/or changing the play once he saw what the defense was doing,” he said.
“He (Peyton) excelled at using the cadence and recognizing blitzes, and more than any one single offensive player, he forced us to change and adapt defensive game plans.”
While in a magnanimous mood Belichick praised Manning’s fellow class-men; former NFL coaches and friends Jimmy Johnson and Bill Cowher.
“Jimmy’s command of personnel, coaching, trades, and the draft made him one of the all-time master team builders,” Belichick said.
“He took a team from 1-15 and turned it into a three-time Super Bowl champion. Jimmy’s defenses — his 4-3 split safety scheme — were as good as I have coached against. Jimmy is a great friend who has given me a lot of good advice throughout much of my career.”
Cowher — who won Super Bowl XL with Pittsburgh — was also lavished by Belichick.
”Bill had a tremendous NFL career that encompassed a lot — player, assistant coach, coordinator, and head coach,” Belichick said.
“Schematically his teams were one of the very best over the course of two decades. Our teams had some fiercely competitive battles that made me a better coach. I admire and learned from his complete mastery of coaching essentials — motivation, strategy, fundamentals, and physical play. Bill and I have been close friends for 35 years and I couldn’t be happier for him.”
Seahawks sign former college basketball star
The Seahawks have taken an unorthodox approach in search of a new piece for Russell Wilson under new offensive coordinator Shane Waldron.
The Seahawks have taken an unorthodox approach in search of a new piece for Russell Wilson under new offensive coordinator Shane Waldron.
After trying out two college basketball players this week, Seattle opted to sign Michael Jacobson — a former Nebraska and Iowa State product, who hasn’t played a down of football since high school.
Not that this is imperative for pro football success, though. Antonio Gates, Jimmy Graham and Julias Thomas are just a few who never played collegiate football.
Jacobson played forward during his time on the hardwood and had an offer from Harvard alongside a football scholarship to Iowa State, both of which he turned down before committing to Nebraska. After his sophomore year, Jacobson transferred from the Huskers to the Cyclones, though he never stepped foot on the gridiron.
Since his college career, the 24-year-old has played professional basketball in Ukraine with Kyiv-Basket.
Jacobson stands at 6’7”, 244 pounds, making it easy to see why Seattle was drawn to the athletic big man. For now, the former Iowa State man is on the Hawks’ 90-man roster. Whether he will get close to the final 53-man roster is yet to be seen, however his first chance to show out may come as early as August 14, when Seattle travels down to face the Raiders in Las Vegas.
Dak, Amari & DeMarcus Lawrence among 16 Cowboys out for Steelers HOF game
It will be Dallas vs. Pittsburgh, but it won’t be Dak vs. Big Ben, with the ‘Boys prized quarterback staying back in Texas as he recovers from a right shoulder (throwing arm) strain suffered in camp last week.
The annual curtain-raiser to the 2021 NFL season begins in Canton where two of the NFL’s most traditional powers will face off.
It will be Dallas vs. Pittsburgh, but it won’t be Dak vs. Big Ben, with the ‘Boys prized quarterback staying back in Texas as he recovers from a right shoulder (throwing arm) strain suffered in camp last week.
Prescott won’t be the Jerry Jones’ only leading light left back in Dallas; star wideout Amari Cooper, defensive end Chauncey Golston, defensive tackle Trysten Hill, and kicker Greg Zuerlein are all on the PUP (physically unable to perform) list.
Veteran o-line pair Tyron Smith and Zack Martin are also confirmed outs alongside T Josh Ball, LB Francis Bernard, CB C.J. Goodwin, S Malik Hooker, TE Blake Jarwin, and CB Jourdan Lewis.
The Cowboys and Steelers face off on Thursday 8PM ET on Fox, or NFL Game Pass for international fans.
Gerald McCoy working out with Las Vegas Raiders
All the way back in April, McCoy reiterated he has a lot left in the tank and wasn’t anywhere near hanging up the cleats.
Stalwart defensive tackle Gerald McCoy has enjoyed an incredible career in the NFL amassing six Pro Bowl appearances, though he isn’t likely to be done yet.
ESPN’s NFL insider FIeld Yates has reported McCoy is out in the desert, visiting - and working out - with Jon Gruden’s Las Vegas Raiders.
All the way back in April, McCoy reiterated he has a lot left in the tank and wasn’t anywhere near hanging up the cleats.
“For me, I just love this game so much, it’s still fun to me,” McCoy told Rick Stroud of The Tampa Tay Times.
“I love competing. I just know what my mindset was going into last season and I don’t want an injury or what the NFL deems ‘age’ to be a derailment and finish like that.” he said.
“I know I can still be an asset to a team, whether it’s sparingly, as a starter, in the locker room, whatever it is. In training camp, a mentor to the young kids. I just know I have so much more to give this game, even if for a short period of time.”
McCoy, an Oklahoma native, signed with his childhood — and America’s — team; Dallas Cowboys. A season-ending quad injury ruined his dream of playing on the big star, witht he Cowboys cutting him in August 2020.
Big Gerald faces stiff competition at defensive tackle with the Raiders having six on their roster, including Jonathan Hankins and former #3 pick Solomon Thomas.
Philip Rivers reveals he’s open to an NFL Comeback
Despite riding off into the Alabaman sunset after his only season with Indianapolis, Philip Rivers revealed the door is open to come on back in search of another seat at the NFL table.
Despite riding off into the Alabaman sunset after his only season with Indianapolis, Philip Rivers revealed the door is open to come on back in search of another seat at the NFL table.
Currently, Rivers is coaching high school football in Alabama, taking the reigns at St. Michael Catholic High School. Despite loving his time working with the youth in his native state, Rivers revealed the fire hasn’t burnt out.
Jogging out through the tunnel seems more possible than it has at any moment since he walked off the field after Indy’s playoff loss in Buffalo back in January 2021.
“I’m just going to stay ready,” Rivers told Sam Farmer of the Los Angeles Times.
“I want to make sure I’m very clear: I’m not predicting I will play in December or January, for that matter. One, you’ve got to have somebody who wants you, and two, it’s got to be right.
“But I have not completely ruled that out.”
Right now though Rivers is contented in Alabama and is far from in shape, and in turn, a while away from a return to the NFL.
“I’m not quite there,” the 39-year-old said.
“I’m getting back there. I wouldn’t have made weight if I had to report last week, that’s for sure. But I am getting back into the lifting and running, and shoot, I occasionally throw a ball around out here in this heat. It’s not too hard to get a good lather going.”
It would be romantic to see Rivers back slinging it with a team in with a shot of the Lombardi trophy but whether that occurs won’t just depend on Rivers’ health, but that of a team’s starting quarterback.
Rodgers: Packers defense incomparable to its past
Amidst a noisy offseason in Green Bay, one group has been moving in silence. And if their quarterback is to be believed, they could finally get over the hump and back to the promised land.
Amidst a noisy offseason in Green Bay, one group has been moving in silence. And if their quarterback is to be believed, they could finally get over the hump and back to the promised land.
"It's definitely different," Rodgers told local reporters today. "It's not really like any of the other defenses that I've faced over the years in practice."
Joe Barry, Green Bay’s new defensive coordinator, has caused confusion for Rodgers and the offense during practice since taking over from the released Mike Pettine.
Recognizing the coverages of Barry’s new defense has been of Rodgers’ bug bears early on this preseason, with third-year safety Darnell Savage particularly causing confusion.
Savage has halted Rodgers many times throughout practice with his ability to swiftly shift positions and find himself where No. 12 wants to throw the ball. So much so, Rodgers has pulled him aside to pick his brain.
"I saw a flash out of my eye, and I couldn't believe … what the hell was Darnell doing there?" Rodgers said. "You're seeing these guys kind of running all over the place, which is definitely difficult even for an older quarterback like myself."
As for the Packers offense and the reigning MVP, there’s not much that’s going to be different. Why would there be after being the #1 scoring offense in the NFL in 2020?
"There's not a whole lot we wanted to change," Rodgers said when asked about this season’s offense.
"I think we might want to refine some things that we did last year and kick some plays out that really didn't fit what we were doing. Added a few things, some wrinkles. Matt does a great job of communicating those things."
Zach Wilson: Aaron Rodgers is my guy but Brady is the GOAT
Jets fans will be praying Zach Wilson shares more than a birthday with the GOAT once his NFL career gets underway.
Jets fans will be praying Zach Wilson shares more than a birthday with the GOAT once his NFL career gets underway.
Both Wilson and Brady blow out the candles tomorrow (August 3), turning 22 and 44 respectively. The BYU product admitted it’s a “pretty dang cool” coincidence before going on to reveal his admiration for the seven-time Super Bowl winner.
“I’d say one of the craziest parts is I think I was one in his first year in the NFL,” Wilson told New York media, via Al Iannazzone of Newsday. “It’s crazy to think about it.”
“Brady, in my opinion, is the greatest of all time,” Wilson said. “I don’t think you can argue that. Wherever he’s at, he’s winning.”
Despite rating the frenzied work-ethic and accomplishments of TB12, Wilson has long admired an NFC quarterback, a man who nearly left Titletown this offseason, none other than Aaron Rodgers.
“I’ve always been a Rodgers guy because of the flashiness, but the thing that’s important in the game is winning,” Wilson said.
“This is a team sport, it’s all about winning. It’s not about how cool a throw looks or anything like that. He’s definitely been a favorite to watch growing up. That’s just because of the way he does it, the way he’s found a system, a process that works for him as far as his offseason conditioning.”
The Jets will be hoping Wilson’s study of Rodgers and Brady translates into his game during his rookie year, as he looks to breathe life into a rejuvenated Jets lineup alongside first-time head coach Robert Saleh.
Chandler Jones wants out of Arizona - Here’s why
All-Pro pass rusher Chandler Jones has officially handed in a trade request, it’s been revealed. The addition of fellow quarterback destroyer J.J. Watt hasn’t been enough to convince Jones to stay in the desert.
All-Pro pass rusher Chandler Jones has officially handed in a trade request, it’s been revealed. The addition of fellow quarterback destroyer J.J. Watt hasn’t been enough to convince Jones to stay in the desert.
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported today, Jones lodged an official trade demand sometime this offseason. Despite his unhappiness with the situation, the three-time Pro Bowler is expected to report to Arizona’s training camp, which begins — for veterans — on Tuesday.
Jones’ motive for wanting out is said to revolve around his current contract. The former Patriot is believed to be upset with the current terms. Since being traded from Foxboro, Jones has established himself as one one of the league’s most prominent sack masters.
Only Aaron Donald has more quarterback hits and sacks across the past five seasons. Yet Jones’ performance and salary remain worlds apart, hence his frustration with the Cardinals organization.
Currently, his five-year, $82.5 million deal has one more year to run. Jones’ AAV (Average Annual Value) is 14th among edge rushers which would most certainly be the issue of contention.
Edge Rushers with a greater AAV than Chandler Jones:
Joey Bosa
Myles Garrett
Khalil Mack
DeMarcus Lawrence
Leonard Williams
Frank Clark
Fred Warner
Von Miller
Trey Flowers
Cam Jordan
Dee Ford
Arik Armstead
Shaq Barrett
By no means is the Cardinals-Jones situation untenable. It’s obvious Jones wants a new — if not restructured — contract. Whether Arizona decides to appease their best player remains to be seen.
One to watch for sure.

Giants’ Logan Ryan creates law enforcement training to dissolve divide and enhance safety of all
New York Giants safety Logan Ryan is known for being an articulate and well-rounded individual within the G-Men’s locker room. Now, the two-time Super Bowl champ has turned his attention to safety of a different kind.
New York Giants safety Logan Ryan is known for being an articulate and well-rounded individual within the G-Men’s locker room. After his first season in the Big Apple, Ryan was awarded the Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award alongside the Giants “Good Guy” Award.
Now, the two-time Super Bowl champ has turned his attention to safety of a different kind. Ryan and his father, Lester, who spent a 25 years in law enforcement, have established Ryan Alternative Solutions Training — a company which “provides law enforcement with use-of-force training and deescalation techniques” in the name of police reform.
Speaking to Good Morning Football on Thursday, Ryan discussed what the training would bring to law enforcement.
“Bringing humanity and harmony back to people,” Ryan said.
“We are honestly preaching and teaching a curriculum that focuses on deescalation first, using your words to deescalate the situation and minimum force techniques if it does get to that point, the first line of defense is minimum force.”
Why does Ryan want to provide a solution to the current division between sections of police and citizens in America?
“So people like my dad can come home to his wife and kids, being a cop for 25 years. And those people who are being arrested or not, can go home to their wife and kids.
“I really wanted to put some skin into the game and take it to the next step and start a company with my dad. There are good apples (police officers) out there, a lot of good apples.
“Just like NFL players, if one of us gets arrested, we’re all deemed bad apples. Oh these NFL guys are spoiled, they’re entitled, they don’t care about winning, they don’t care about life! Well, there’s a lot of good guys who are doing good things behind the scenes just like my Dad…I believe he has some insight that can help with what’s going on with police reform.”
If you’re still wondering what the essence of Ryan’s initiative is, let him leave you with no doubt.
“Empathy, harmony, deescalation, minimum force techniques is what my company is teaching and I really want to get involved as an athlete in police reform.”
Why Davante Adams & Packers canceled extension talks
If you thought Green Bay’s offseason couldn’t get much worse, then look away now.
If you thought Green Bay’s offseason couldn’t get much worse, then look away now.
The Packers are already engaged in one will he/won’t he saga with quarterback Aaron Rodgers, and now All-Pro receiver Davante Adams is set to join him.
Despite being in discussions for months about a new long-term extension with the team, both Adams and the Packers have decided to end negotiations with the relationship said to be in a “bad place” according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport’s sources.
According to Rapoport, Green Bay have not offered a package which would make Adams football’s #1 paid receiver — a central component as to why extension talks have ceased.
Talks had continued despite the uncertainty surrounding Packers quarterback - another currently disgruntled with the front office.
Last season was spectacular for Adams on an individual level — finishing as the league leader in touchdown receptions (18) and fifth among receivers in yards.
The 28-year-old will become an unrestricted agent at the end of the 2021 NFL season.
Packers fans would love some positive news to come out of Lambeau quick smart. It’s difficult to see how they can return to former glories when their two prized assets remain at odds with the organization.
Drew Brees talks Jameis, Taysom & the QB who has caught his eye
Drew Brees believes the quarterback battle down in New Orleans is unlikely to end anytime soon.
Drew Brees believes the quarterback battle down in New Orleans is unlikely to end anytime soon. The Saints GOAT thinks both Jameis Winston and Taysom Hill will spend time under centre in New Orleans’ first season without Brees in 16 years.
“Both guys have such a love for the game … and you can see it in the way they play. Taysom has an infectious love for the game,” Brees told Mike Tirico in Football Morning in America.
“There is not a guy who is more respected for that and for what he brings to the team. Jameis was such a joy to be around. He also loves the game and loves to work at it. You can tell that football consumes his thoughts.
“He wants to be a great player and continue to improve. Whatever happens, in terms of whoever is the starter, I do think there is a scenario where both of them are playing. If Jameis is the starter I think Taysom is seeing a lot of action at quarterback, maybe even more-so than he did with me.”
As for withdrawals from his time in the New Orleans spotlight, Brees hasn’t come across any yet.
“I have been preparing for the next chapter, I’m excited about it. There is a feeling of gratitude and appreciation for all that the game gave me,” he said.
“I still have a chance (at NBC) to be connected with the game and stay involved, but I am excited to be able to pursue some other passions that I haven’t been able to up to this point.”
Brees is preparing to play a large part in NBC’s football coverage this season, signing on as a studio analyst for Football Night in America. A guy you’ll hear him speak about and this season is Justin Herbert; the Chargers quarterback who has caught his eye more than any other youngster in the league.
“I don’t think I’ve seen an athlete quite like him. We played them last year, and I was impressed,” Brees revealed.
“Then I saw him at mini-camp in OTAs and was amazed at how big and strong he is. His forearms and hands look like he has been digging fence-post holes his entire life. He is good, smart and has those leadership qualities. You talk about building an offense around a guy, he can be a 15-year franchise guy.”
Brees will also be instrumental in NBC’s coverage of Notre Dame, in addition to the Olympics and of course, Super Bowl LVI.
NFL issues forfeit threat for 2021 season - how it could occur
There’s never a quiet day in the NFL, with today being no exception.
There’s never a quiet day in the NFL, with today being no exception.
Commissioner Roger Goodell informed teams, via a memo yesterday, of new ‘incentives’ to get vaccinated ahead of the NFL season — just 48 days away.
What incentives you may ask? Well, none in the traditional sense. Think of it more as if you were a child. If you behave well, you won’t be smacked by your parents.
The NFL hasn’t enforced vaccinations of its players but after the latest memo it seems as if players have few choices remaining. Unvaccinated players may cause forfeits and lose their game checks if they cause an insolvable disruption to NFL games, causing outrage among players.
Here’s how a forfeit will occur in the 2021 NFL season:
A game is postponed due to ongoing health concerns of an outbreak.
The NFL can't find a reasonable date to reschedule within the 18-week regular season.
The postponement of a game was resultant of an outbreak amongst one team’s unvaccinated players.
If disruption to the schedule is caused by an outbreak among vaccinated players, the league, in yesterday’s memo, said they "will attempt to minimize the competitive and economic burden on both participating teams.”
Certainly interesting times ahead for the league, players and NFLPA.
‘They Know Who They Are’ - Tom Brady doubles down on teams who passed on him
You may not like it, but Tom Brady’s still carrying that chip…the dogged, competitively spiteful mentality…
You may not like it, but Tom Brady’s still carrying that chip — no, I don’t mean the Lombardi Trophy, though he is very much in possession of it heading into the NFL season.
Rather, the dogged, competitively spiteful mentality. Make no mistake Brady is the type who would want GMs and owners wincing each time they see him in a Bucs uniform. TB12 hasn’t forgotten who passed on his signature in free agency last year and is hellbent on inflicting further pain upon them.
“They know who they are. They know who they are . . . it’s fine. Everyone has a choice to choose. I think what you realize is, there’s not as many smart people as you think,” Brady said in an interview with Jim Gray on Sirius XM.
“That’s just the reality. I think it’d be a no-brainer if you said, hey, you’ve got a chance to get Wayne Gretzky on your team, or you got a chance to have Michael Jordan on your team . . . Oh, we don’t need him, no thanks. We’re good.”
This comes shortly on the heels of Brady mentioning his reaction to teams passing on him while starring on LeBron James'‘ television show, The Shop.
“I was thinking, you’re going with that motherfucker?” Brady’s quote understandably went viral and despite being pressed, refused to reveal to Gray which team he was specifically referring to.
“There’s private things for me that are going to remain motivational for me,” Brady said.
Lord help them if we ever find out which team Brady was talking about. What is certain however is Brady hasn’t lost an ounce of hunger and that grudge mentality remains.
Bring on week 4 in Foxboro.

Aaron Rodgers turns down contract to become NFL’s highest paid player
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, A-Rod turned down a two-year extension, meaning he would have remained in TItletown until the end of the 2025 season.
Aaron Rodgers’ relationship with the Packers is far from fixed with the first-ballot Hall of Fame declining their offer to become the NFL’s biggest earner.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, A-Rod turned down a two-year extension, meaning he would have remained in TItletown until the end of the 2025 season.
Rumors persist that Rodgers wants to leave Milwaukee, with Denver spoken about heavily. The prospect no matter how unlikely, is an enticing one for Broncos Country who would have another game-wrecker to go with Von Miller and their stout defense.
It had been rumored Rodgers was offered a new deal by Green Bay, however Schefter’s revelation of the scale proves yet again the Packers and no.12 are a long way apart.
Many expect the reigning MVP to return to Green Bay and head up the Packers’ push for a first Super Bowl appearance since their 31-25 win over Pittsburgh in 2011.
Whatever happens, we know this isn’t about money for Aaron, this proves it more than anything thus far.
If Rodgers doesn’t make his way to Denver before the season, this saga may not have an end date.
Buckle up folks.
Justin Fields visits gun shot victim - makes his life
Scott Morrow was walking down the street when he was shot in the back…Morrow willed himself to live on, he couldn’t pass before witnessing the Bears’ great white hope.
Chicago’s new quarterback Justin Fields has endeared himself to Bears and football everywhere after a beautiful act of kindness toward a Bears fan who nearly lost his life last month.
Scott Morrow, a 41-year-old Chicago resident, was walking down the street when he was shot in the back. While being whisked away in an ambulance, Morrow willed himself to live on, he couldn’t pass before witnessing the Bears’ great white hope.
“I thought well…pretty much all of Chicago has gone our whole lives without even having great prospects for a franchise quarterback, I can’t die before seeing Justin Fields take the field,” Morrow told 670 The Score.
“I don’t plan to die before he’s a Hall of Famer.”
After hearing Morrow’s comments and learning about his accident, Fields and his parents visited Morrow at his home, with the rookie handing over a jersey to his new pal.
Morrow has a GoFundMe page set up which will help his recovery after losing his spleen and a kidney during the life-saving operation process.
If Fields plays anywhere close to the level of kindness and compassion he showed this Bears fan, he’ll live long in the hearts and minds of The Windy City faithful.
NY Jets sign rookie OL Alijah Vera-Tucker
AVT, as he is affectionately known, was the second-highest rated offensive lineman in the 2021 Draft Class, according to Pro Football Focus.
The New York Jets have announced the signing of rookie offensive lineman Alijah Vera-Tucker.
AVT, as he is affectionately known, was the second-highest rated offensive lineman in the 2021 Draft Class, according to Pro Football Focus. Vera-Tucker allowed only 5 sacks, 8 quarterback hurries and 3 quarterback hits across 975 total snaps at USC.
The former USC standout was the Jets second pick in the draft (no.14 overall) behind quarterback Zac Wilson who, along with second-round receiver Elijah Moore, remains unsigned.
Jets GM Joe Douglas spoke glowingly about their new quarterback-protector, revealing Vera-Tucker was a lot higher on their draft board than where he was selected.
"We felt we had a unique opportunity to get a top-10 player in our minds as our board was stacked,” Douglas said.
"To go up and get a guy like Alijah Vera-Tucker, a player that has started at tackle, has started at guard and has been highly productive at both. That versatility and that production is something we really value."

Matthew Judon believes Pats will rise again
“With him leading a group of hungry, willing men, it’s nothing but up from last year,”
Patriots newcomer Matthew Judon is excited at what he and his fellow teammates can do in this upcoming season under their GOAT head coach, Bill Belichick.
Judon, who was speaking to Good Morning Football on Monday, revealed the Pats are hungry to get back to their former glories.
The Pats’ no.9 described Coach Belichick as "arguably the best coach to ever coach any sport.
“With him leading a group of hungry, willing men, it’s nothing but up from last year,” he said.
Judon also spoke to the potential quarterback competition brewing in Foxboro between veteran Cam Newton and first-round draft choice, Mac Jones.
“We all know how it goes. If you’re not playing to a certain standard, it’s the next man up. I think he’ll be playing to that standard, but it’s yet to see. We going to see in a couple weeks.”
Judon also provided some insight to how Cam is approaching the newfound pressure ahead of his second season with the Patriots.
“When he comes in the meetings, he’s in the front of the meetings,” Judon said. “He’s attentive. When we get out on the field, he’s the loudest on the field and he’s always having fun with it. So I expect him to go out there, treat it as a business, go out there and make plays, and lead the quarterbacks, lead the team,” he said.
If Judon and the New England defense can hold up their end of the bargain, Belichick and co. are every chance to once again throw down the gauntlet in the AFC East.
